The Leuser Forest Ecosystem

The Leuser Ecosystem is an area of tropical forest in the North of Sumatra Island in Indonesia. Covering more than 2.6 million hectares it is the largest and most significant forest remnant remaining in Sumatra, one of the richest expanses of tropical rain forest in Southeast Asia, and the last place on earth where the Sumatran elephant, Sumatran rhino, Sumatran tiger and orangutan can be found living together in one area. It is a mysterious and beautiful landscape of forests, rivers, valleys and mountains home to many amazing species of plants and animals, an important source of oxygen for our planet and part of the UNESCO world heritage site Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.
